TL;DR
- Houston prediction markets span sports and local weather, with ERCOT demand adding a Texas-wide topic.
- A contract's rules define the event, data source, time window and payout. A familiar team or city name is only the starting point.
- Kalshi's historical Houston temperature contract cited below used the NWS Houston-Hobby daily climate report. Check the current contract before assuming the same rule applies.[7]
- Daily and annual electricity-demand questions are different products. Do not substitute a forecast for the result specified by the rules.
- Eligibility depends on the operator and product. Federal registration does not mean every person can trade every contract.

Can you trade prediction markets in Houston?
Check the platform, the product and your eligibility. The CFTC register lists Kalshi and QCX LLC, doing business as Polymarket US, as designated contract markets.[4]
That federal status should not be presented as a blanket ruling on every Texas event contract. The CFTC and some states have disputed jurisdiction; the agency's April 2026 Wisconsin announcement documents one such conflict.[5] It does not establish a Texas-specific outcome.
Read the operator's current access terms and our Kalshi Texas guide. Polymarket US and the international Polymarket platform should not be treated as interchangeable products. Verify the US market listing before assuming a contract shown elsewhere is available to a Houston account.
Houston markets at a glance
Use this as a guide to questions worth checking, not a promise that every market is currently open.
| Topic | Example question | What to verify in the contract |
|---|---|---|
| Astros | A game result, division title or playoff outcome | Season, official outcome, named sources and tiebreakers |
| Texans | A game result or postseason qualification | Season, game date, postponements and settlement rules |
| Rockets | A game, playoff series or championship outcome | Exact season, round and outcome definition |
| Houston temperature | Daily high within a stated range | Station, daily report, date, units and final reading |
| Hurricanes | A storm characteristic or seasonal count | Basin, storm definition, deadline and named report |
| ERCOT demand | Peak demand above a stated threshold | Daily versus annual period, demand measure, units and source |
Kalshi has Houston sports topic pages and has listed the temperature and daily ERCOT examples cited in this guide.[7][8][12][13] A historical listing demonstrates how a product worked; it does not prove it is open today.
This week in Houston markets
Snapshot checked September 24, 2026. Refresh before using it after the next games.
Astros: Astros and Rangers were 78-80 with four games left; Houston held their tiebreaker.[1]
Texans: Houston opened 0-2.[2] The team schedule lists a September 27 road game at Indianapolis, followed by a home game against Dallas on October 4.[3]
These are sports facts, not live contract prices. A change in standings does not tell you the price at which you can buy or sell a particular contract.
Astros prediction markets
For Astros AL West odds, first identify whether the question concerns the official division winner, playoff qualification or a single game. Those outcomes are related but not identical. Kalshi's Astros page is a starting point for finding listed markets.[12]
A tied win-loss record does not by itself settle a division-winner contract. Check the competition's tiebreaking procedure and the contract's definition of the winning outcome. Use the named settlement sources; some sports rules cite more than just the league website.[14]
Worked example: a division-winner contract
Hypothetical $1 binary contract, illustrative price, held to settlement. Fees excluded.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Buy 20 Yes contracts at 55¢ | $11 cost |
| If the specified Astros outcome resolves Yes | $20 payout; $9 profit |
| If it resolves No | $0 payout; $11 loss |
This example is arithmetic, not a current Astros quote or a recommendation. Confirm the live contract's outcome and fee schedule before calculating a net result.[15][16]
Texans prediction markets
Houston Texans playoff odds answer a different question from the price on this Sunday's game. Read the season and qualification wording instead of treating either price as a general rating of the team.
For example, 25 hypothetical $1 Yes contracts at 30¢ would cost $7.50. A winning settlement would return $25, producing $17.50 profit before fees. A losing settlement would lose the $7.50 purchase cost, plus any fees. A low entry price does not by itself show a bargain.
Use the official Texans schedule for opponents and game dates. Then check the exchange for a currently open contract with the question you intend to evaluate.
Rockets prediction markets
Kalshi has a Houston Rockets topic page.[13] Check the exact season and whether the contract concerns a game, playoff series, qualification or championship. An old result remaining on a topic page is not a new season's open market.
Review contract rules when a schedule or roster changes. Do not assume that similar team names or page headings mean two contracts will settle the same way.
Houston weather prediction markets
Start with the station and report. The historical Kalshi Houston high-temperature contract referenced here named the NWS daily climate report for Houston-Hobby. Its guidance distinguished the final specified climate report from preliminary readings and third-party weather apps.[7]
Use the contract's actual station, date and reporting rules. A generic forecast for Houston may describe a different location or measurement.
Worked example: Hobby and Bush Intercontinental
Hypothetical readings and bracket, not a forecast or a live market.
Assume the contract names Houston-Hobby's final daily high and a winning range of 99–100°F. If the specified report records 99°F at Hobby, that range qualifies in this example. A 101°F reading at Bush Intercontinental would not replace the named station's result.
The lesson is to match the observation to the exact question. Do not assume all future Houston contracts use the same station or range.
Hurricane season markets
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30.[10] A hurricane-related contract can ask about a particular storm, a wind threshold, a landfall or a seasonal total. Those are separate questions with different definitions and deadlines.
Read the named basin, geographic boundary, measurement and source before comparing prices. A market covering the entire Atlantic does not directly measure Houston's local storm risk. NHC reports provide authoritative storm information, but the specific contract determines which report and version settles it.[11]
Follow official weather and emergency guidance for safety decisions. Market prices are not warnings or evacuation instructions.
ERCOT grid prediction markets
Kalshi's researched example is a daily ERCOT peak-demand market with thresholds in megawatts.[8] Do not label it as an annual market. An annual peak contract, if listed, would use a different time window.
ERCOT's dashboard displays current and forecast supply and demand. The forecast is not the observed result. ERCOT also notes that some demand measures exclude battery charging, which is another reason to check the contract's exact data definition.[9]
The dashboard is a research reference. It is not automatically the settlement source for every ERCOT contract.
Worked example: reading a threshold
Hypothetical contract: “Will the specified demand measure be above 85,000 MW during the stated period?” Assume a strict greater-than rule and a $1 Yes contract.
| Final specified demand | Above 85,000 MW? | Yes-contract payout |
|---|---|---|
| 84,999 MW | No | $0 |
| 85,000 MW | No | $0 |
| 85,001 MW | Yes | $1 |
“Above” and “at least” are different conditions. Check rounding, reporting revisions and the applicable period in the real rules. None of the numbers above is a current demand reading or a claimed live market threshold.
If you bought 10 of these hypothetical Yes contracts at 40¢ each, the cost would be $4. A winning settlement would pay $10 for $6 profit before fees; a losing settlement would lose $4, plus any fees.
Before comparing platforms
Use our platform comparison to review product types, costs and eligibility. Confirm that the exact Houston-related contract exists on the US platform you plan to use. A partner relationship or federal registration alone does not establish that product's current availability.
Kalshi's signup guidance states a minimum age of 18 and includes identity and eligibility requirements.[6] That is Kalshi-specific. Each other operator requires a separate current check.
Houston and Texas politics
Houston readers may also want to follow statewide election questions. Use our Texas politics coverage and check the candidate list, jurisdiction and election date against official election sources before relying on a market title.

FAQ
Are prediction markets legal in Houston? Kalshi and Polymarket US are listed as CFTC-designated contract markets. That status does not answer every Texas product or individual eligibility question. Check current platform terms and our Texas legal guide; federal and state jurisdiction has been disputed.[4][5]
What should I check in Astros AL West odds? Check the season and whether the contract settles on the official division winner. Tiebreakers and named settlement sources can matter even when teams have identical records.
Which weather station do Houston temperature contracts use? The historical Kalshi example in this guide used the NWS Houston-Hobby daily climate report. Check the current contract because its station, date and reporting rules control the result.[7]
Are ERCOT markets daily or annual? The researched Kalshi example is a daily peak-demand market. Read each contract’s time window; a daily result does not establish an annual outcome.[8]
Does above 85,000 MW include exactly 85,000 MW? Under the strict hypothetical rule used here, no. Above means greater than the threshold. Always read the real contract’s rounding and settlement rules.
Can a hurricane market tell me whether Houston is safe? No. Follow official forecasts, warnings and local emergency guidance. A contract may concern a wider region, a different measurement or another deadline.
Does a low-priced Texans contract mean good value? No. The price is a market estimate rather than a guarantee or proof of value. Check the event definition, cost, fees and possible loss.
How old do you have to be to use Kalshi? Kalshi’s individual signup guidance states 18 or older, with identity and eligibility requirements. This does not establish the minimum age for other operators.[6]
Trading risk
Kalshi: 18+. Eligibility restrictions apply and products are not available everywhere. Event-contract trading can lose the full entry cost, including fees. Consider whether trading is appropriate for your financial circumstances. This guide is educational, not a recommendation to place a trade.[6][8]
